Ashok Leyland is an Indian multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Background
The company traces its origins to Ashok Motors, established in 1948 in Madras (now Chennai) to assemble Austin cars. In collaboration with British manufacturer Leyland Motors, the company began assembling commercial vehicles, and was renamed Ashok Leyland in 1955 following equity participation by Leyland Motors. Over the decades, Ashok Leyland evolved from a licensee assembler into an independent designer and manufacturer of commercial vehicles tailored to Indian operating conditions.
In 1987, the Hinduja Group, along with IVECO, acquired a controlling stake in the company. The Hinduja Group subsequently became the principal promoter of Ashok Leyland.

Ashok Leyland operates manufacturing plants across India, including facilities at Ennore (Chennai), Hosur in Tamil Nadu, Alwar in Rajasthan, Bhandara in Maharashtra and Pantnagar in Uttarakhand. The company also has overseas manufacturing presence, including a plant in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates through its joint venture history.
