Background
Bhanjpur is a neighbourhood of Baripada, the headquarters of Mayurbhanj district in northern Odisha. The town historically formed the seat of the erstwhile princely state of Mayurbhanj, ruled by the Bhanj dynasty, from which the locality and the station take their name.
The Rupsa–Bangriposi line, on which the station is situated, originated as a narrow gauge route built during the early twentieth century to connect the Mayurbhanj region with the main line at Rupsa Junction on the Howrah–Chennai trunk route. The line was subsequently converted to broad gauge as part of the Indian Railways' uniform gauge programme, after which through services to Baripada and beyond resumed.
Services
The station is a wayside stop on the branch line and is served primarily by passenger and intercity services connecting Baripada with Rupsa Junction and onward destinations such as Balasore and Kharagpur. It mainly handles local commuter traffic for residents of Bhanjpur and adjacent parts of Baripada.
Significance
As one of the stations within the Baripada urban area, Bhanjpur provides rail access to a part of the town that lies away from the main Baripada railway station. It supports daily movement between Baripada and the larger junction towns of the East Coast and South Eastern railway networks, and contributes to connectivity for the predominantly tribal and agrarian Mayurbhanj district.
