With the steady growth of higher education in the region and the need to address local academic requirements, the State Government decided to create a separate university dedicated to the district. The university was carved out by transferring undergraduate colleges of the Bankura district from the University of Burdwan to its own jurisdiction.

Academics

The university operates through postgraduate departments at its own campus while also functioning as an affiliating body for general degree colleges across Bankura district. Programmes are offered in disciplines including Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Education, Commerce, and various natural and applied sciences. Research leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees is also conducted in selected departments.

Campus and administration

The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor, with a Registrar overseeing administration and a Controller of Examinations responsible for academic evaluations. Statutory bodies such as the Court, Executive Council, and Academic Council govern its functioning under the relevant West Bengal university legislation.

Significance

By concentrating higher education resources within the district, Bankura University plays an important role in widening access to advanced studies for students from rural and semi-urban backgrounds in Bankura and adjoining areas. It also supports regional research, particularly in subjects relevant to the geography, culture, and economy of the Rarh and Jangalmahal regions.
