Background
Balotra district was announced as part of a wider reorganisation of administrative units in Rajasthan, in which the state government created several new districts to bring administration closer to citizens and to reduce the size of unwieldy older districts. Barmer, from which Balotra was carved, had long been one of the geographically largest districts in India, and the separation of Balotra was intended to ease governance, revenue administration, and service delivery in its eastern tehsils.
Geography
The district lies in the arid zone of western Rajasthan. The terrain is characterised by sandy plains, low dunes, and scrub vegetation typical of the Thar Desert ecosystem. The seasonal Luni River, the principal river of western Rajasthan, flows through the area around Balotra town, supporting limited agriculture along its course. The climate is hot and dry, with high summer temperatures, cool winters, and low, erratic rainfall concentrated in the south-west monsoon season.
Economy
Balotra town, the district headquarters, is one of the most prominent textile-processing centres in Rajasthan and is particularly known for its cotton dyeing and printing industry. A large number of textile units engaged in printing, dyeing, and finishing operate in and around the town, producing fabrics for domestic and export markets. Agriculture, livestock rearing, and trade in wool and hides are other important economic activities, while handicrafts associated with the Marwar region also contribute to local livelihoods.
Administration
As a revenue district of Rajasthan, Balotra is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with subordinate tehsils and sub-divisions handling local revenue, land records, and general administration. Law and order are overseen by a district police establishment headed by a Superintendent of Police. The district falls within the jurisdiction of the Rajasthan High Court at Jodhpur.
Culture
The district shares the broader cultural fabric of Marwar, including Marwari language and dialects, folk music and dance traditions, and religious fairs. The annual Tilwara cattle fair, held on the banks of the Luni near Balotra, is among the well-known livestock fairs of Rajasthan and attracts traders, herders, and visitors from across the region. Temples, dargahs, and Jain shrines in and around the district reflect the area's plural religious heritage.
Transport
Balotra is connected by rail and road to other parts of Rajasthan and neighbouring states. The town lies on a railway route linking Jodhpur with Barmer, and is served by state and national highways that connect it with Jodhpur, Barmer, Pali, and Jalore.
