Geography
Balotra lies in the arid plains of western Rajasthan, on the banks of the Luni, the principal river of the region. The terrain is largely flat with sandy soils characteristic of the fringe of the Thar Desert. The climate is hot and dry, with high summer temperatures, low annual rainfall concentrated in the south-west monsoon, and cool winters.
History
The town has historical associations with the Mallinath tradition of Marwar, and the nearby village of Tilwara hosts the annual Tilwara Pashu Mela (cattle fair) held in honour of Rawal Mallinath, a Rajput ruler venerated in the region. The fair traditionally begins around Chaitra Krishna Ekadashi and is one of the largest livestock fairs in Rajasthan, drawing traders of cattle, horses and camels from across north-western India.
Balotra developed as a textile centre during the twentieth century, when small-scale dyeing and hand-block printing units expanded into a cluster of mechanised processing houses. In 2023, the Rajasthan government announced administrative reorganisation under which Balotra was designated as the headquarters of a newly created district.
Economy
Balotra is best known for its textile industry, especially the processing, dyeing and printing of cotton and synthetic fabrics. The cluster comprises a large number of small and medium units producing printed sarees, suit material and dress fabric for markets across India. Associated activities include screen printing, finishing and trading of grey cloth. The textile cluster has also been the subject of environmental regulation concerning effluent discharge into the Luni, leading to the establishment of common effluent treatment infrastructure.
Agriculture and animal husbandry remain important in the surrounding rural areas, with bajra (pearl millet), pulses and oilseeds as common crops, and sheep, goat and cattle rearing widely practised.
Transport
Balotra is connected by rail on the Jodhpur–Barmer line of the North Western Railway, and Balotra Junction is a stop for several passenger and express services. The town is served by state highways linking it with Barmer, Jodhpur, Pali and Jalore. The nearest major airport is at Jodhpur.
Culture
The area around Balotra reflects the cultural traditions of Marwar, including folk music, Rajasthani cuisine and crafts such as block printing. The Tilwara fair near Balotra is a significant cultural and economic event, and several temples in the surrounding region attract pilgrims, including shrines associated with the Mallinath tradition and Jain places of worship in nearby villages such as Nakoda.
