The institution traces its origins to Crescent Engineering College, an engineering college established by the philanthropist and industrialist B. S. Abdur Rahman through the B. S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Educational Trust. For several years it functioned as an affiliated engineering college under the University of Madras and, subsequently, Anna University.
