Background
The college takes its name from Saint John de Britto, known in Tamil as Arul Anandar, a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit missionary who worked in the Madurai region. Karumathur, where the campus is situated, lies on the Madurai–Theni route, in a predominantly agrarian setting. The institution forms part of the wider network of Jesuit higher education establishments in Tamil Nadu, which includes Loyola College, Chennai and St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli.
Academic profile
The college offers undergraduate degree programmes in disciplines spanning the humanities, social sciences, commerce, and the natural sciences, together with selected postgraduate and research programmes. Departments commonly include English, Tamil, Economics, History, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Social Work. Instruction is provided in both English and Tamil to support first-generation learners from surrounding villages.
Mission and rural outreach
Consistent with the educational philosophy of the Society of Jesus, Arul Anandar College places strong emphasis on the education of rural and economically disadvantaged students. The college runs extension programmes, social work field placements, and rural development initiatives in the villages around Karumathur, integrating community engagement into the curriculum. Activities under the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the National Cadet Corps (NCC) are part of student life.
Campus
The campus at Karumathur houses academic blocks, laboratories, a library, hostels for men, sports facilities, and a chapel. Its rural setting is used as a deliberate pedagogical context, allowing the college to operate field-based learning in agriculture, sociology, and social work.
Significance
As one of the few autonomous-style Jesuit arts and science institutions located in a rural area rather than a metropolitan centre, Arul Anandar College has played a notable role in expanding access to higher education in southern Tamil Nadu. It is recognised within the Jesuit higher education network for combining liberal arts teaching with sustained rural engagement.
