Background

Arjun Tendulkar was born in Mumbai into one of Indian cricket's most prominent families. He took to cricket at an early age and was a familiar presence at training grounds during his father's career. He attended the MIG Cricket Club in Bandra, where he developed his bowling skills, and trained at various points under coaches associated with Mumbai's age-group cricket structure.

Junior and age-group cricket

Arjun progressed through Mumbai's age-group teams, representing the city at under-14, under-16 and under-19 levels. He was named in the India Under-19 squad for tours and developmental fixtures, and gained early attention as a left-arm pace bowler at a time when India had relatively few options in that style.

Domestic career

Arjun made his List A debut for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December 2020. He made his Twenty20 debut for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and later made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, taking a wicket with his very first ball in red-ball cricket. He subsequently moved to play for Goa in domestic cricket to gain greater playing opportunities.

Indian Premier League

Arjun was signed by Mumbai Indians at the IPL 2021 auction. He remained with the franchise as a squad member over the following seasons before making his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2023. The match brought additional attention because Sachin Tendulkar had also represented Mumbai Indians, making the family association with the franchise a notable element of the debut.

Style of play

Arjun is a left-arm pace bowler who can swing the new ball and is also used in the death overs in white-ball cricket. As a batter, he is a hard-hitting left-hander who typically bats in the lower middle order.

Significance

As the son of Sachin Tendulkar, Arjun's career has attracted unusually close media scrutiny. His progression through Mumbai's domestic structure and his IPL debut have been treated as events of public interest in Indian cricket, and he is among a small number of recognised left-arm pace bowlers in the contemporary domestic circuit.
