Overview
Ambalappuzha is a wayside station situated on the route connecting Ernakulam Junction with Kayamkulam Junction via Alappuzha. The line is one of the two parallel rail corridors linking central and southern Kerala, the other being the older inland route via Kottayam. The station primarily handles passenger traffic and serves as a halt for several express and passenger services running along the coastal corridor.
Location and connectivity
The station is located in the temple town of Ambalappuzha, well known for the Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple. It is positioned between Alappuzha railway station to the north and Haripad railway station to the south. By road, the town lies along National Highway 66, which runs broadly parallel to the railway line through coastal Kerala.
Background
The Ernakulam–Alappuzha–Kayamkulam coastal railway line was developed to provide an alternative route to the Ernakulam–Kottayam–Kayamkulam line and to bring rail connectivity to the densely populated coastal belt of central Kerala. Following the completion of the line and its later electrification, stations along the route, including Ambalappuzha, came to handle a wider mix of long-distance and intra-state services.
Services
The station is served by passenger and express trains operating between destinations in Kerala and other parts of southern and northern India. Most long-distance trains using the coastal route via Alappuzha pass through Ambalappuzha, with select services providing scheduled halts.
Significance
Ambalappuzha railway station provides rail access for residents of Ambalappuzha and the surrounding panchayats, and supports pilgrim traffic to the Sri Krishna Temple, particularly during festival seasons. It also functions as a feeder station for the broader Alappuzha urban area.
