Background

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor is being constructed using Japanese Shinkansen technology, with technical and financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The corridor connects Mumbai in Maharashtra with Ahmedabad in Gujarat, passing through several intermediate stations across the two states. The Ahmedabad station is planned as the northern terminus of the alignment.

Location and integration

The high-speed rail station at Ahmedabad is being built adjacent to the existing Indian Railways network in the city, which is intended to allow passengers to interchange between conventional rail services and the high-speed corridor. The wider rail ecosystem of the city includes Ahmedabad Junction railway station, a major terminus on the Western Railway zone.

Significance

As a terminal of India's first high-speed rail line, the Ahmedabad high-speed railway station is intended to play a central role in introducing bullet train services to the country. The project marks a significant transfer of high-speed rail engineering, signalling, and rolling-stock practices from Japan to India, and the station is designed to serve as a hub for high-capacity intercity travel between Gujarat and Maharashtra.
