The station is also a starting and terminating point for several long-distance trains originating in Gujarat.
History
Railway services in Ahmedabad began in the second half of the 19th century when the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (BB&CI) extended its network from Bombay to the city. Ahmedabad subsequently became an important junction on the route linking Bombay with Delhi via Rajasthan. After Indian independence and the reorganisation of Indian Railways, the station was placed under the Western Railway zone, which was formed in 1951.
The station has been progressively expanded, electrified and modernised over the decades, with the addition of platforms, foot overbridges and passenger amenities to handle increasing traffic.
Layout and facilities
Ahmedabad Junction has multiple platforms serving express, mail, superfast, passenger and suburban services. Standard facilities include waiting rooms, retiring rooms, refreshment stalls, computerised reservation counters, ATMs and Wi-Fi connectivity. The station has separate entrances on the Kalupur and Saraspur sides of the tracks.
Connectivity
The station is well integrated with city transport. It is adjacent to the Kalupur central bus terminus operated by the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC). The Ahmedabad Metro provides interchange at the Kalupur station on its East–West corridor. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are available outside the main entrance.
Redevelopment
Ahmedabad Junction has been identified for redevelopment as a multi-modal transit hub, integrating Indian Railways services, the Ahmedabad Metro and the proposed Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor (bullet train), which has its Ahmedabad terminus planned adjacent to the existing station complex.
Significance
As the principal station of Gujarat's largest city and a key node on the Western Railway network, Ahmedabad Junction handles a high volume of passenger and freight traffic. It plays an important role in commerce, tourism and daily commuting in the Ahmedabad metropolitan region.
