He earned the Grandmaster title while still a teenager, joining a growing cohort of Indian players to cross that threshold in the late 2000s.

Career

World Junior Championship

Gupta won the World Junior Chess Championship in 2008, held in Gaziantep, Turkey. The title placed him in a list of Indian winners of the event that includes Viswanathan Anand and Pentala Harikrishna, and it brought him international recognition on the open tournament circuit.

Commonwealth Chess Championship

He has won the Commonwealth Chess Championship on several occasions, becoming one of the most consistent performers in the event's history. His victories include editions held in different host cities across the Commonwealth, with strong performances against fields including a number of grandmasters from India and South Asia.

Open tournaments and team play

Gupta has been a regular on the European open tournament circuit, with results at events such as the Reykjavik Open and various opens in Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic. He has represented India in team events and has played in the Indian leg of national team competitions and league chess.

Playing style and rating

Gupta is regarded as a solid positional player with strong endgame technique, comfortable in both classical and rapid formats. His FIDE rating has placed him within the upper tier of Indian grandmasters for much of his career.

Significance

Gupta's career has contributed to the broadening of Indian chess beyond its traditional centres in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, with Rajasthan emerging as a notable producer of titled players. His World Junior victory and repeated Commonwealth titles have made him a recognisable figure in the Indian chess ecosystem and an example for younger players from non-metropolitan backgrounds.
