Background
Harikrishna was born on 10 May 1986 in Guntur, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. He learned chess at an early age and progressed rapidly through age-group competitions in India, drawing comparisons within the Indian chess community to the country's first Grandmaster, Viswanathan Anand. By his early teens he was already competing in international tournaments and norm events in Europe and Asia.
Career
Junior achievements
Harikrishna won the World Under-10 Championship in 1996. He went on to claim the Asian Junior Championship and, in 2004, the World Junior Chess Championship, becoming one of the few Indian players to win that title. These successes established him as a leading prospect in international chess.
Grandmaster title
He earned the Grandmaster title in 2001, becoming, at the time, one of the youngest Indians to reach the title. This placed him in a small group of Indian GMs in the early 2000s, alongside players such as Viswanathan Anand, Krishnan Sasikiran and Surya Shekhar Ganguly.
National and international play
Harikrishna has been a regular member of the Indian national team at the Chess Olympiad and the Asian Team Chess Championship. He has played in numerous strong open and round-robin events in Europe, including tournaments in Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. He has been associated with European clubs in team competitions, including engagements in the German Bundesliga and other national leagues.
Rating and ranking
He has been among the highest-rated Indian players for much of his career, at various points crossing the 2700 Elo mark, which placed him among the world's top players. For extended periods he has ranked second among Indian players behind Anand, although his ranking has shifted with the rise of younger Indian Grandmasters.
Playing style
Harikrishna is known for a positional and well-prepared approach, with strong opening preparation and solid endgame technique. He plays a wide range of openings with both colours and has contributed novelties in mainline systems played at top level.
Recognition
He has received the Arjuna Award from the Government of India for his contribution to chess, recognising his sustained achievements at international level.
Personal life
Harikrishna has lived for parts of his career in Europe, basing himself closer to the European tournament circuit. He has been associated with the Czech Republic as a training and residence base.
Significance
Harikrishna is part of the second wave of Indian Grandmasters who emerged after Viswanathan Anand and helped expand India's presence at the top of world chess. His consistent results in elite events, team performances for India, and longevity at the 2700+ level make him an influential figure in the country's transition from a one-star chess nation to a leading chess power.
