Overview
Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) is the Indian subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra. The company was formed in 2019 through the consolidation of three of the German automotive group's Indian entities — Škoda Auto India, Volkswagen India and Volkswagen Group Sales India — into a single corporate body. Background
The Volkswagen Group's presence in India began with Škoda Auto, which entered the Indian market in 2001 and set up a plant at Aurangabad in Maharashtra. Volkswagen India followed later in the decade, establishing a manufacturing facility at Chakan, near Pune, which began operations in 2009. Audi India also assembles select models at the Aurangabad facility. Over time, the group operated through multiple legal entities in India, each handling specific brands and functions.
Consolidation and India 2.0
In 2019, the group merged Škoda Auto India Private Limited, Volkswagen India Private Limited and Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Limited into a single entity, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited. The consolidation was undertaken to streamline operations, reduce duplication and support the group's "India 2.0" project, under which Škoda Auto was designated as the lead brand for the group's product strategy in India.
Under India 2.0, the group localised the MQB-A0-IN platform — a derivative of the Volkswagen Group's modular MQB platform — adapted specifically for Indian conditions and cost structures. Vehicles built on this platform include the Škoda Kushaq and Škoda Slavia, and the Volkswagen Taigun and Volkswagen Virtus. These models are produced at the Chakan plant with significant local content.
Manufacturing

While Škoda and Volkswagen are positioned in the volume premium segment, Audi operates in the luxury segment, and Porsche and Lamborghini cater to the high-performance and supercar markets. The company also supports the group's exports from India to markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Significance
SAVWIPL represents one of the largest European automotive investments in India and is central to Volkswagen Group's strategy in South Asia. The India 2.0 project is regarded as a notable example of platform localisation by a global automaker for the Indian market, with high indigenisation levels enabling competitive pricing in the mid-size SUV and sedan segments.
