Background

The university grew out of the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), which was set up in 1987 as a collaborative initiative between the Government of Odisha and the Odisha Jesuit Society. XIMB became one of the better-known business schools in eastern India, offering postgraduate programmes in business management, rural management, and human resource management.

Over time, additional schools were created around XIMB, including a school of human resource management, a school of rural management, a school of communications, a school of sustainability, and a school of computer science and engineering. These constituent schools were brought together under a unified university structure.

Establishment as a university

XIM University was established as a state private university by the Government of Odisha. With this transition, XIMB and the other associated schools became constituent schools of the new university, while continuing to be administered under the Jesuit tradition of education. The main academic campus is situated at Harirajpur in Puri district, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, with an earlier campus retained in Bhubaneswar city.

Academics

The university is organised into multiple constituent schools that offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Areas of study include:

  • Business management (MBA and related programmes through XIMB)
  • Human resource management
  • Rural management
  • Sustainability management
  • Communications
  • Computer science and engineering
  • Commerce
  • Government and public policy

Admission to flagship management programmes is conducted through national-level entrance examinations such as XAT, CAT, and the institute's own admission test.

Campus

The principal campus of XIM University is located at Harirajpur, in Puri district, while the original XIMB campus continues to function in Bhubaneswar. Both locations lie within the Bhubaneswar metropolitan region in eastern Odisha.

Significance

XIM University and its predecessor XIMB have played a significant role in management and professional education in eastern India, particularly in fields such as rural management and sustainability that are closely linked to the developmental context of Odisha. As a Jesuit institution, it is part of a wider network of Xavier-branded educational establishments in India.
