Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, widely referred to as VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, is a prominent public medical institution located in New Delhi. It functions as both a medical college offering undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and as one of the largest government-run tertiary care hospitals in India. The institution is administered under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University for its academic programmes.
Safdarjung Hospital, the clinical component of the institution, serves a vast patient population from Delhi and surrounding states, providing free or heavily subsidised healthcare services. The hospital is a major referral centre for complex and critical cases across a wide range of medical and surgical specialities.
Safdarjung Hospital has a long history as a central government hospital in New Delhi, having served the capital's population for several decades. The medical college, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, was established to provide structured undergraduate and postgraduate medical training using the hospital's extensive clinical resources. The college is named in honour of Vardhman Mahavir, the twenty-fourth tirthankara of Jainism, reflecting a broader tradition in Indian public institutions of naming establishments after historical and philosophical figures.
Over the years, the institution has expanded its academic departments, research activities, and clinical infrastructure, establishing itself as one of the significant medical colleges in the National Capital Region.
VMMC offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, the institution provides MD, MS, and diploma programmes across a range of clinical and para-clinical specialities. Super-speciality fellowships and doctoral programmes are also conducted in select departments.
The academic curriculum follows the guidelines set by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex regulatory body for medical education in India. Faculty members are drawn from various specialities and contribute to both teaching and clinical service delivery.
Safdarjung Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Asia by patient footfall and bed capacity. It provides services across departments including general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, oncology, and many others. The hospital operates dedicated emergency and trauma services, catering to a high volume of emergency cases from across Delhi and neighbouring states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
Medical students and postgraduate residents receive hands-on clinical training within the hospital, benefiting from exposure to a diverse and large patient base. The hospital's outpatient departments, operation theatres, intensive care units, and diagnostic laboratories form the core of practical medical education at the institution.
The campus houses the medical college building, hospital wards, outpatient blocks, administrative offices, a central library, lecture halls, and residential accommodation for students and resident doctors. The central library maintains a collection of medical texts, journals, and digital resources to support academic and research activities.
The institution also has a skills laboratory and simulation facilities to support modern competency-based medical education as mandated by the National Medical Commission.
Admission to the MBBS programme is through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency. Seats are filled through the centralised counselling process managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services. Postgraduate admissions are conducted through NEET-PG, also managed centrally.
Students at VMMC participate in academic societies, cultural events, sports activities, and community health outreach programmes. The resident doctors' association and student bodies organise events throughout the academic year. The institution's location in New Delhi provides students access to the broader cultural, academic, and professional resources of the capital city.
