Vaishali Rameshbabu is an Indian chess player from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She is a Grandmaster (GM) and a Woman Grandmaster (WGM), and is the elder sister of chess prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa. In 2023, she became India's 84th Grandmaster, and along with her brother formed the first sibling pair in chess history to both hold the GM title.

Vaishali was born in Chennai to Rameshbabu, a bank employee, and Nagalakshmi. She was introduced to chess at a young age, reportedly as a way to reduce television viewing, and her interest in the game led her younger brother Praggnanandhaa to take it up as well. Both siblings trained under Grandmaster R. B. Ramesh at the Chess Gurukul academy in Chennai.
Vaishali made her mark in age-group events on the international circuit. She won the World Youth Chess Championship in the Girls Under-12 category in 2012 and the Girls Under-14 title in 2015. She earned the Woman International Master (WIM) title and subsequently the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title in her teens.
She has represented India at multiple Chess Olympiads, including playing on the Indian women's team that won the bronze medal at the 44th Chess Olympiad held in Chennai in 2022. She has also been a regular member of the Indian squad at the Asian Nations Cup and the FIDE Women's Grand Prix series.
Vaishali achieved her final Grandmaster norm at the IV Llobregat Open in Spain in late 2023, becoming the third Indian woman to hold the open Grandmaster title, after Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika. With this, she and Praggnanandhaa became the first brother–sister duo in chess history to both be Grandmasters.
By winning the FIDE Grand Swiss in the women's section in 2023 at Douglas, Isle of Man, Vaishali qualified for the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament 2024, held in Toronto, Canada. She and Praggnanandhaa thus became the first siblings to qualify for their respective Candidates Tournaments in the same cycle.
Vaishali's rise is significant within Indian chess for several reasons. She is part of a wave of strong Indian players emerging from Chennai's training ecosystem, and her achievement of the Grandmaster title added to a small but growing list of Indian women holding the open GM norm. The simultaneous success of Vaishali and Praggnanandhaa has drawn international attention to family-driven chess training in India and to the role of academies such as Chess Gurukul.
