Usha Mangeshkar was born into a Marathi-speaking family with strong roots in classical music and theatre. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a noted classical vocalist and stage actor associated with Marathi sangeet natak. After his death in 1942, the family relocated and the elder siblings, especially Lata, took up the responsibility of the household, with all five Mangeshkar children eventually entering music professionally.
Usha received her early musical training within the family environment. Apart from singing, she has shown interest in painting and visual arts.
Usha began recording in Hindi films from the 1950s, often singing supporting numbers, club songs, item numbers and group songs in films where her elder sisters provided the lead vocals. Over the following decades she lent her voice to a wide range of Hindi productions, frequently in light, peppy or folk-inflected compositions.
Her most widely known assignment came with the low-budget devotional film Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), directed by Vijay Sharma with music by C. Arjun. Usha sang the bhajans "Main To Aarti Utaroon", "Yahan Wahan Jahan Tahan" and other tracks dedicated to the goddess Santoshi Maa. The film became a major commercial success and contributed to the spread of the worship of Santoshi Maa as a popular deity across north and western India. The songs continue to be played in households and temples during Santoshi Maa observances.
Alongside her Hindi work, Usha has had a substantial career in Marathi film and non-film music, including bhavgeet, koligeet (Maharashtrian fisherfolk songs), lavani and devotional songs. She has collaborated with her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar as a composer on several Marathi projects. She has also recorded songs in Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri and Nepali, including work in Nepali cinema.
Usha Mangeshkar has recorded a large catalogue of devotional albums, including bhajans, aartis and stutis dedicated to Hindu deities. These recordings, distributed widely through cassette and later digital formats, form a significant part of her popular legacy.
Her vocal style is generally lighter and more folk-oriented than that of her elder sisters, which made her a frequent choice for situational numbers, comic songs, character songs and devotional pieces. Music directors who worked with her in Hindi cinema include C. Ramchandra, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Kalyanji–Anandji, R. D. Burman, Usha Khanna and C. Arjun, among others.
Usha Mangeshkar's career illustrates the breadth of the Mangeshkar family's contribution to Indian music beyond the dominant figures of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Her work in Jai Santoshi Maa remains a landmark in Hindi devotional film music, and her regional recordings, particularly in Marathi, have given her a steady, distinct identity within Indian playback singing.
