Overview
Santoshi Mata (Hindi: संतोषी माता), also known as Santoshi Maa (संतोषी माँ), is a Hindu goddess venerated as "the Mother of Satisfaction", which is the meaning of her name. She is particularly worshipped by women in North India and Nepal, who turn to her for the fulfilment of domestic wishes and family well-being.
A central feature of her devotion is the Santoshi Maa vrata, a ritual fast observed by women on sixteen consecutive Fridays in order to win the goddess's favour. Her worship initially spread through word of mouth, inexpensive vrata pamphlets, and popular poster art, gaining a quiet following among North Indian women before reaching wider audiences.
The 1975 Bollywood film Jai Santoshi Maa ("Victory to Santoshi Maa"), which narrated the story of the goddess and her ardent devotee Satyavati, was instrumental in transforming her from a relatively little-known figure into an object of widespread devotional fervour among Hindus across India. With the film's growing popularity, Santoshi Mata entered the pan-Indian Hindu pantheon, and her images and shrines were incorporated into Hindu temples. The film also portrayed the goddess as the daughter of Ganesha and connected her to the Raksha Bandhan festival, themes that have since become widely associated with her tradition.
Santoshi Mata is also regarded by some communities in Rajasthan as a Kuladevi, or family deity, reflecting her continuing significance in regional and household worship.
