Urban Ladder was founded in 2012 by Ashish Goel and Rajiv Srivatsa, both alumni of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, with prior experience in technology and consumer internet companies. The venture was launched at a time when the Indian furniture market was largely unorganised, with limited online presence and inconsistent quality standards. The company positioned itself as a curated, design-led retailer focused on full-stack control over product design, sourcing and last-mile delivery.
The business began as an online-only retailer offering a curated catalogue of furniture across categories such as living, dining and bedroom. In its early years, Urban Ladder raised capital from investors including Kalaari Capital, SAIF Partners and Sequoia Capital India, and later attracted investment from Steadview Capital and Ratan Tata.
Over time, the company broadened its catalogue from furniture into adjacent categories including home décor, mattresses, lighting and furnishings. It also moved into omnichannel retail, opening physical experience centres in cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR and Pune, where customers could view products before placing orders.
In 2020, Reliance Retail Ventures Limited, the retail arm of Reliance Industries, acquired a majority stake in Urban Ladder. The acquisition gave Reliance access to Urban Ladder's design and digital retail capabilities and integrated the brand into the broader Reliance Retail portfolio of consumer businesses.
Urban Ladder operates a vertically integrated model in which most products are designed in-house and manufactured through a network of contract manufacturers, primarily in India. Sales are conducted through the company's website and mobile application, with physical stores acting as discovery and experience points. The company manages logistics, assembly and after-sales service either directly or through dedicated partners.
Urban Ladder is regarded as one of the early movers in India's organised online furniture retail segment, alongside competitors such as Pepperfry. It contributed to the shift in Indian consumer behaviour toward purchasing large-ticket home goods online, and to the development of standards around branded, design-driven furniture in the country. Its acquisition by Reliance Retail is also cited as part of the wider consolidation of Indian e-commerce and direct-to-consumer brands under large conglomerates.
