Background

Reliance Retail was incorporated as part of Reliance Industries' diversification into the organised retail sector in India. The business was led by Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, with the aim of creating an integrated value chain spanning sourcing, supply, and customer-facing stores. The retail venture launched its first stores under the Reliance Fresh banner in Hyderabad, marking the company's entry into neighbourhood grocery retailing.

Store formats and brands

Reliance Retail operates a portfolio of store formats catering to different categories and customer segments. Major banners include:

  • Reliance Fresh – neighbourhood grocery and fresh produce stores.
  • Reliance Smart and Smart Bazaar – supermarket and hypermarket formats.
  • Reliance Digital – consumer electronics and appliances.
  • Reliance Trends – apparel and fashion.
  • Reliance Jewels – jewellery retail.
  • Reliance Footprint – footwear.
  • AJIO – online fashion and lifestyle marketplace.
  • JioMart – online grocery and general merchandise platform.
  • Netmeds – online pharmacy (acquired by the group).

Acquisitions and partnerships

Reliance Retail has expanded through both organic growth and acquisitions. Notable additions to the group include the online pharmacy Netmeds, the lingerie retailer Zivame, the toy retailer Hamleys, and a controlling stake in Future Group's retail and logistics businesses (a transaction that was the subject of prolonged litigation). The company has also entered into partnerships and franchise arrangements with international brands across apparel, footwear, and consumer goods to expand their presence in India.

Investments

In 2020, Reliance Retail Ventures Limited raised significant equity investment from a consortium of global investors, including private equity firms and sovereign wealth funds. These investments valued RRVL among the most valuable retail companies in India and provided capital for further expansion of its physical and digital retail operations.

Digital commerce

JioMart, launched as a digital commerce platform, integrates the company's physical retail network with its online channels and connects with neighbourhood kirana stores through the Jio ecosystem. The platform offers groceries, electronics, fashion, and other categories, and is part of Reliance's broader strategy to combine telecom (Jio), digital services, and retail.

Significance

Reliance Retail is regarded as one of the largest organised retailers in India by store count and revenue. Its expansion has played a notable role in the growth of organised retail in the country, including in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The company is also a major employer in the Indian retail sector.
