Chand emerged through age-group cricket in Delhi, progressing through state-level youth teams before being selected for the India Under-19 side. He was educated at St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, while pursuing his cricket career.
Chand led India to the title at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in Australia in 2012. In the final against Australia, he played a match-winning unbeaten innings that drew widespread attention to him as a young captain and batsman.
He represented Delhi in domestic competitions including the Ranji Trophy and limited-overs tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
