The university was established by the Government of Rajasthan to decentralise higher education administration in the state and to reduce the affiliation load on the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. Prior to its creation, colleges in the Kota region were largely affiliated to other state universities. With the formation of the University of Kota, the affiliating responsibility for government and private colleges in the Kota division was transferred to the new institution.
Kota itself is widely known as a major centre for coaching in engineering and medical entrance examinations, and the city has developed a substantial ecosystem of educational institutions. The University of Kota functions alongside this network, focusing on conventional university education in the arts, sciences, commerce, management, law, and related disciplines.
As an affiliating university, it oversees curricula, examinations, and the award of degrees for affiliated undergraduate and postgraduate colleges in its territorial jurisdiction. The university also maintains its own teaching departments and campus-based postgraduate programmes in selected disciplines, along with research activities leading to the award of doctoral degrees.
The University of Kota plays a central role in regulating higher education across the Hadoti region of Rajasthan. By acting as the regional affiliating body, it standardises academic processes for a large number of colleges and provides students in the region with access to university-level examinations and degrees without having to depend on universities in distant cities.
