Overview

The University of Rajasthan is a state public university located in Jaipur, the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Commonly referred to as Rajasthan University or RU, it is one of the oldest universities in the state and serves as an affiliating, teaching, and research institution offering programmes across the arts, sciences, commerce, law, management, and engineering.

Background

The University of Rajasthan was established in the years following Indian independence to serve as the principal centre of higher education in the newly formed state of Rajasthan. It was originally known as the University of Rajputana before being renamed. The university campus is situated in Jaipur and houses a range of teaching departments, research centres, and affiliated colleges spread across the state.

As a state university, it is funded by the Government of Rajasthan and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university awards undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees, and conducts examinations for a large network of affiliated colleges in addition to its on-campus departments.

Academics and structure

The university is organised into multiple faculties, including Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Commerce, Law, Management Studies, Education, Fine Arts, and Engineering. It hosts specialised institutes and centres covering disciplines such as public administration, Rajasthan studies, Sanskrit, and various branches of the natural and social sciences.

Affiliated colleges across Rajasthan come under its examination and academic supervision, making it one of the larger affiliating universities in northern India.

Significance

As the flagship state university of Rajasthan, the institution has played an important role in expanding access to higher education in the region, training generations of civil servants, academics, lawyers, and professionals.
