Torrent Power is part of the Torrent Group, which was founded by U. N. Mehta and which also has significant interests in pharmaceuticals through Torrent Pharmaceuticals. The power business of the group was consolidated under Torrent Power Limited, bringing together generation assets and the distribution licences that the group had acquired or taken over in Gujarat and other states.
Torrent Power supplies electricity as a licensed distributor in the Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat areas of Gujarat. It also operates distribution franchise arrangements in cities outside Gujarat, including Bhiwandi in Maharashtra and Agra in Uttar Pradesh, where the company manages distribution on behalf of the respective state utilities.
The company owns and operates gas-based thermal power stations, with major facilities at locations such as Sugen and Unosugen in Gujarat, along with coal-based capacity and a growing portfolio of renewable energy projects covering wind and solar generation across multiple Indian states.

Torrent Power is among the larger private sector integrated power utilities in India and is one of the few private licensees authorised to undertake retail electricity distribution in major urban areas. Its distribution franchise model in Bhiwandi is widely cited as an early example in India of a private operator being engaged to reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses in a state-owned distribution circle.
