Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti had collaborated as writers and filmmakers prior to formalising the banner, including on screenplays such as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), both directed by Akhtar, and Talaash: The Answer Lies Within (2012), directed by Kagti. Tiger Baby was set up to give their joint creative work a dedicated production home, while continuing to co-produce with Excel Entertainment, the company run by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.
Projects associated with Tiger Baby tend to focus on contemporary urban India, class and caste, gender, and identity, while working within mainstream production scales. The banner has been noted for foregrounding women writers, directors and protagonists, and for nurturing music and youth-centred narratives.
Tiger Baby is regarded as part of a wave of filmmaker-led production companies in Hindi cinema that emerged in the 2010s, alongside outfits such as Excel Entertainment, Dharmatic Entertainment and Clean Slate Filmz. Its output has contributed to mainstream Indian cinema's engagement with subcultures like hip-hop, and to the growth of premium Hindi-language drama on streaming platforms.
