Her brother Farhan Akhtar is a director, actor and producer. Zoya pursued formal training in filmmaking at New York University in the United States.

Before her directorial debut, she worked as an assistant director on several Hindi films, gaining experience in casting, scripting and on-set production. This apprenticeship period shaped her observational style and her interest in the inner workings of the film industry, which later informed her debut feature.

Career

Luck By Chance (2009)

Akhtar's debut feature, which she also co-wrote, starred Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma. Set within the Hindi film industry, it offered a satirical look at ambition and stardom. Although a modest commercial performer, the film received critical acclaim and earned her recognition as a distinctive new voice.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Her second feature, co-written with Reema Kagti, was a road-trip drama set in Spain featuring Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Katrina Kaif. The film was both a critical and commercial success and won the Filmfare Award for Best Film, with Akhtar receiving the Filmfare Award for Best Director.

Bombay Talkies (2013) and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)

She contributed the segment Sheila Ki Jawaani to the anthology Bombay Talkies, made to mark a hundred years of Indian cinema. Dil Dhadakne Do, released in 2015, was an ensemble family drama set on a Mediterranean cruise, examining the dynamics of a wealthy Punjabi family.

Gully Boy (2019)

Inspired by the lives of Mumbai street rappers Divine and Naezy, Gully Boy starred Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The film won numerous awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Best Director, and was selected as India's official entry to the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

The Archies (2023)

Akhtar directed The Archies, a musical adaptation of the American Archie Comics set in an Anglo-Indian hill town in the 1960s. The film was released on Netflix and marked the screen debuts of Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor and Agastya Nanda.

Production work

Through Tiger Baby Films, Akhtar has produced and co-created the Amazon Prime Video series Made in Heaven (2019, 2023), about high-end wedding planners in Delhi. She has also produced films such as Talaash (2012) and Dahaad (2023, web series).

Themes and style

Akhtar's work is often situated within affluent or aspirational urban milieus, although Gully Boy marked an extended engagement with working-class life in Mumbai. Recurring concerns in her films include sibling relationships, parental pressure, gender roles, repressed desire and the cost of ambition. Her storytelling typically blends ensemble drama with carefully placed musical sequences, and she frequently collaborates with screenwriter Reema Kagti and music composers Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy.
