The company traces its lineage to Tata Tea Limited, which was established in 1964 and grew to become one of the largest tea producers in the world. Tata Tea was renamed Tata Global Beverages in 2010 to reflect its broader beverages portfolio, including the Tetley business acquired in 2000. Separately, Tata Chemicals had built a branded consumer foods portfolio anchored by Tata Salt, India's first national branded iodised salt, launched in 1983, along with pulses and spices under the Tata Sampann label.
In May 2019, the Tata Group announced a scheme of arrangement to combine the consumer products business of Tata Chemicals with Tata Global Beverages. After regulatory and shareholder approvals, the merged entity was renamed Tata Consumer Products Limited and the new structure became effective in early 2020. The reorganisation brought tea, coffee, salt, pulses, spices and water businesses under one company, while Tata Chemicals retained its basic chemistry and specialty products businesses.
TCPL has manufacturing and packaging operations across India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Czech Republic, and other locations, supported by tea estates and sourcing networks. International business is conducted through subsidiaries including Tata Consumer Products UK, Tetley, and Eight O'Clock Coffee. The company also distributes products through general trade, modern trade, and e-commerce channels.
TCPL is among the largest branded tea companies in the world by volume and is a leading player in the Indian salt and packaged staples markets. Tata Salt holds a dominant position in the Indian iodised salt category, and the company's tea brands have a substantial share in domestic and international markets. The 2020 consolidation positioned TCPL as the principal vehicle for the Tata Group's ambitions in the broader Indian FMCG sector, alongside peers such as Hindustan Unilever, Nestlé India, and ITC.
The company is governed by a board of directors with N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, serving as chairman. Sunil D'Souza is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. TCPL is a constituent of leading Indian equity indices and is part of the listed Tata Group portfolio.
