Background

TASL was established to consolidate the Tata Group's aerospace and defence engineering and manufacturing capabilities under a single entity. The company operates manufacturing facilities in and around Hyderabad, with additional sites in Karnataka and other locations in India, focused on precision aerostructures, composites, and integrated systems.

The company has built its portfolio through a combination of in-house development, technology partnerships, and joint ventures with leading global aerospace and defence firms. Its work spans the supply of components and assemblies to original equipment manufacturers, as well as the integration of platforms for the Indian armed forces.

Activities and Programmes

Aerostructures and Aircraft Manufacturing

TASL has been a tier-one supplier to global airframers, producing fuselage assemblies, empennage sections, and other major structures. It has executed long-term supply contracts with companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Airbus, and Sikorsky for both military and commercial platforms. Notable programmes include the manufacture of fuselages for the Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter through a joint venture with Boeing, and components for the Lockheed Martin C-130J and S-92 helicopter cabins.

C-295 Transport Aircraft

TASL is the Indian industrial partner with Airbus Defence and Space for the manufacture of the C-295 medium transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force. Under the programme, the airframes are produced at a final assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat, marking the first private-sector final assembly line for a military aircraft in India.

Missiles, Radars and Systems

The company manufactures missile sub-systems, radar systems, and command, control and communications equipment, often in collaboration with Indian defence public sector undertakings and foreign technology partners. It has worked on programmes related to surface-to-air missile systems and battlefield radars.

Unmanned and Optronic Systems

TASL also designs and produces unmanned aerial vehicles, optronic sighting systems, and electronic warfare equipment for military applications.

Joint Ventures and Partnerships

  • Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited — joint venture with Boeing for AH-64 Apache fuselage manufacturing.
  • Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited — joint venture for C-130J empennage assemblies and other aerostructures.
  • Tata Sikorsky Aerospace Limited — joint venture for S-92 helicopter cabin manufacturing.
  • Airbus partnership — industrial partner for the C-295 programme in India.

Significance

TASL is one of the largest private-sector aerospace and defence companies in India and a key participant in the Government of India's "Make in India" and indigenisation initiatives in defence manufacturing. By establishing private final assembly lines and tier-one supply relationships with major global OEMs, the company has contributed to the growth of an indigenous aerospace supply chain and the export of high-value aerospace components from India.
