The film draws on the historical figure of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, a chieftain from the village of Uyyalawada in present-day Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. Following the cessation of pension payments by the East India Company and grievances over the revenue settlement system, Narasimha Reddy organised a rebellion in 1846–1847 across the Rayalaseema region. He was eventually captured and executed by the British in 1847, and is regarded in Andhra Pradesh as one of the earliest freedom fighters against colonial rule in southern India.
The film was conceptualised as a tribute to Chiranjeevi's 150th film and was developed over several years, with significant attention given to costume design, set construction and large-scale battle choreography.
Principal photography commenced in 2017 and continued in schedules across multiple locations including Hyderabad, Georgia and parts of Rayalaseema. The screenplay was written by Paruchuri Brothers, with dialogues by Sai Madhav Burra. Action sequences were choreographed by an international team, including Lee Whittaker and Ram-Lakshman. The production design recreated 19th-century forts, palaces and rural settlements of the Rayalaseema region.
The original soundtrack was composed by Amit Trivedi, with the background score by Julius Packiam. Lyrics were written by Sirivennela Sitaramasastri, Ramajogayya Sastry and others. The album was released by Zee Music Company.
The film was released worldwide on 2 October 2019, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and the Dussehra festival period. It was simultaneously dubbed and released in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam. The Hindi version was presented in distribution by AA Films, while Nirvana Cinemas handled the Tamil release.
The film received generally positive reviews, with particular praise directed at Chiranjeevi's performance, the production design, cinematography by Rathnavelu and the scale of the battle sequences. It performed strongly at the box office in Telugu-speaking regions and is regarded as one of the higher-grossing Telugu films of 2019.
At the 67th National Film Awards, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy received recognition for Best Special Effects (V. Srinivas Mohan). The film also won several Filmfare Awards South and SIIMA awards in technical categories including costume design, art direction and choreography.
The film contributed to renewed public interest in Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy and pre-1857 anti-colonial uprisings in southern India. It was promoted as a recognition of regional figures of resistance whose contributions are less widely represented in mainstream historical narratives. The release coincided with calls in Andhra Pradesh for greater commemoration of Narasimha Reddy as a freedom fighter.
