His father, Konidela Venkata Rao, was a constable in the police department, and his mother was Anjana Devi. He completed his schooling in Mogalthur, Bapatla, Gurazala, Nidadavolu, Narsapur and Mandapeta, and later earned a commerce degree from C. S. R. Sarma College in Ongole. He subsequently enrolled at the Madras Film Institute (now the Government Film and Television Training Institute), where he trained in acting.

Film Career

Early years (1978–1983)

Chiranjeevi made his screen debut with Punadhirallu, although Pranam Khareedu (1978) released earlier. His early films cast him in negative or supporting roles, but his energetic screen presence quickly drew attention. Khaidi (1983), directed by A. Kodandarami Reddy, was a turning point and established him as a leading action hero.

Rise to stardom (1984–1990)

Through the mid-1980s, Chiranjeevi delivered a string of commercial successes including Challenge (1984), Donga (1985), Pasivadi Pranam (1987), and Yamudiki Mogudu (1988). His Western-style dance choreography, particularly in songs from Khaidi No. 786 (1988) and Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari (1990), set new trends in Telugu cinema.

Peak commercial period (1991–2002)

Films such as Gang Leader (1991), Aapadbandhavudu (1992), Mutha Mestri (1993), Hitler (1997), Choodalani Vundi (1998), and Indra (2002) consolidated his commercial dominance. Indra, directed by B. Gopal, was among the highest-grossing Telugu films of its time.

Hindi cinema

Chiranjeevi appeared in the Hindi film Pratibandh (1990) and Aaj Ka Goonda Raj (1992), gaining a measure of national recognition.

Return after political career

After a hiatus from acting that began in 2007, Chiranjeevi returned to the screen with Khaidi No. 150 (2017), a remake of the Tamil film Kaththi. Subsequent films include Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019), based on the historical figure Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy; Acharya (2022); Godfather (2022); Waltair Veerayya (2023); and Bholaa Shankar (2023).

Production and Other Ventures

Chiranjeevi has produced films through banners associated with the Konidela family. In 1998, he founded the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust, which has been involved in blood and eye donation drives in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He also chaired the Indian Film Federation activities related to actor welfare on several occasions.

Political Career

On 26 August 2008, Chiranjeevi launched the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) in Tirupati, contesting the 2009 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. The party won 18 seats; Chiranjeevi himself won from the Tirupati constituency while losing in Palakollu. In February 2011, he merged the PRP with the Indian National Congress.

He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and served as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism in the second Manmohan Singh ministry from October 2012 to May 2014.
