Sushmita Sen was born into a Bengali family in Hyderabad. Her father served in the Indian Air Force, and the family relocated frequently during her childhood. She studied at Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute in New Delhi and later attended Mehboob College of Commerce in Secunderabad before turning to modelling and pageantry.
In 1994, at the age of eighteen, Sen won the Femina Miss India contest, defeating fellow contestant Aishwarya Rai. She represented India at the Miss Universe pageant held in Manila, the Philippines, on 21 May 1994, where she was crowned the winner — making her the first Indian to receive the title. The same year, Aishwarya Rai won Miss World, and the dual victories were widely regarded as a turning point for India in the international pageant circuit.
Sen made her acting debut in the Hindi film Dastak (1996), directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Her early notable appearances include Biwi No.1 (1999) and Sirf Tum (1999). She received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Filhaal... (2002), directed by Meghna Gulzar.
Other significant films include Main Hoon Na (2004) directed by Farah Khan, in which she played a teacher opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005). She also appeared in Tamil cinema with Ratchagan (1997). She produced and starred in I Am and the television production Dus Kahaniyaan-related ventures through her banner Tantra Entertainment.
After a hiatus from cinema, Sen returned to lead roles with the Disney+ Hotstar web series Aarya, which premiered in 2020. The series, directed by Ram Madhvani, was nominated at the International Emmy Awards in the Best Drama Series category, and Sen received critical acclaim for her portrayal of the protagonist.
Sen runs the I Am She Foundation, associated for several years with selecting India's representative at the Miss Universe pageant. She has been an outspoken advocate for the rights of single parents and adoption rights, having gone through legal processes in India to formalise both adoptions as an unmarried woman. She has spoken publicly about being diagnosed with Addison's disease and about recovering from a heart attack in 2023.
Sen's 1994 Miss Universe win is regarded as a landmark moment in the global visibility of Indian women in international pageantry, contributing to the rise of pageantry-linked careers in modelling, advertising, and Hindi cinema during the late 1990s. Her later choices — adopting children outside marriage and returning to leading roles in her forties through digital streaming — have been cited as influential in shifting public conversations on single parenthood and ageism in Indian entertainment.
