Sreenarayanaguru Open University (SGOU) is a state open university in Kerala, India. Established by the Government of Kerala, it is named after the social reformer and philosopher Narayana Guru, and was set up to expand access to higher education through open and distance learning across the state.

Open universities in India are designed to provide flexible, learner-centred education to students who cannot pursue conventional full-time study, including working professionals, women returning to education, and learners in remote areas. Kerala, despite its high literacy rate, had long relied on the distance education wings of conventional universities and on the national-level Indira Gandhi National Open University for open learning provision. The creation of SGOU consolidated this work under a dedicated state-level open university.
The university was established by an Act of the Kerala Legislative Assembly and is recognised as a state open university within the framework regulated by the University Grants Commission. Its naming after Narayana Guru, whose teachings emphasised education and social reform irrespective of caste, reflects the university's stated mission of equitable access to higher education.
SGOU offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, along with diploma and certificate courses, primarily in the humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, and selected science and applied subjects. Course delivery combines self-learning materials, contact classes at affiliated learner support centres across Kerala, and online learning components.
As Kerala's dedicated open university, SGOU plays a central role in widening participation in higher education in the state.
