She grew up in Mumbai and graduated in fashion designing from SNDT Women's University, after which she worked briefly as a costume designer for Hindi films, including the 2008 Akshay Kumar film Mera Dil Leke Dekho's wardrobe assignments and other projects, before turning to acting.
Sinha's breakthrough came when filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap and producer Arbaaz Khan cast her opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg (2010), an action drama set in Uttar Pradesh. The film was a commercial blockbuster and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She followed it with Rowdy Rathore (2012) opposite Akshay Kumar, Son of Sardaar (2012) with Ajay Devgn, and Dabangg 2 (2012). These films established her as a leading actress in mass-market commercial cinema.
Sinha appeared in Lootera (2013), directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and co-starring Ranveer Singh, which received critical praise for her performance as a Bengali zamindar's daughter. She continued with commercial vehicles such as Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014), Action Jackson (2014), Tevar (2015), R… Rajkumar (2013) and Akira (2016), an action film directed by A. R. Sonakshi Sinha's debut in Dabangg coincided with the rise of small-town, mass-market action films in Hindi cinema during the early 2010s, and she became closely associated with that genre's lead-actress mould. Her later transition into long-form streaming work, particularly with Dahaad and Heeramandi, reflects the broader shift of established Hindi film actresses towards OTT platforms in the 2020s.
