Background

Shatrughan Sinha was born on 9 December 1945 in Patna, Bihar, into a Kayastha family. He was the youngest of four sons of Bhuvaneshwari Prasad Sinha and Shyama Devi. He completed his schooling in Patna and went on to study at Patna Science College before joining the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, from which he graduated in 1969.

Film career

Sinha entered Hindi cinema in the late 1960s, and one of his early appearances was in Sajan (1969). He initially gained attention in villainous roles, distinguished by his expressive eyes, a facial scar, and a powerful voice. By the early 1970s, he transitioned into lead roles and became one of the prominent stars of Hindi cinema.

Political career

Sinha joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the early 1990s. He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha and was inducted into the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, holding the portfolios of Health and Family Welfare and later Shipping (2003–2004).

He won the Lok Sabha seat from Patna Sahib constituency in Bihar in 2009 and was re-elected in 2014, both times on a BJP ticket. In 2019, after differences with the BJP leadership, he joined the Indian National Congress and contested the Patna Sahib seat, losing to Ravi Shankar Prasad. He subsequently joined the All India Trinamool Congress and won the Asansol Lok Sabha by-election in 2022 in West Bengal.
