He completed his schooling locally and later moved to Chennai, where he studied engineering at R.M.D. Engineering College. While in college, he developed an interest in mimicry and stage performance, which laid the foundation for his entry into the entertainment industry.

Television career

Sivakarthikeyan rose to public attention as the winner of the first season of Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, a stand-up comedy reality show telecast on Vijay TV. The visibility from the show led to hosting and anchoring assignments on Tamil television, including programmes such as Adhu Idhu Yedhu. His comic timing and rapport with audiences during these years helped him establish a strong fan base before his film debut.

Film career

Debut and early years (2012–2014)

He made his film debut with Marina (2012), directed by Pandiraj, in which he played a supporting role. His first lead role came in Manam Kothi Paravai (2012). He followed it with Ethir Neechal (2013), directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar and produced by Sundar C, and Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam (2013), directed by Ponram, both of which were commercial successes and established him as a leading actor in family entertainers.

Mainstream success (2014–2018)

Films such as Maan Karate (2014), Kaaki Sattai (2015), Rajini Murugan (2016), Remo (2016) and Velaikkaran (2017) consolidated his standing at the box office. Remo, directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan, in which he appeared in a cross-dressing role, became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of its year. Velaikkaran, directed by Mohan Raja, marked a shift towards socially themed cinema.

Production and recent work (2018 onwards)

In 2018, he founded Sivakarthikeyan Productions, debuting as a producer with Kanaa (2018), directed by Arunraja Kamaraj, a sports drama centred on women's cricket. He starred in Seemaraja (2018) and the science-fiction film Hero (2019). Doctor (2021), directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, was both a critical and commercial success, followed by Don (2022), directed by Cibi Chakaravarthi.

He played the lead in Prince (2022), Maaveeran (2023) and Ayalaan (2024), the last being a visual-effects-heavy science-fiction film directed by R. Ravikumar. Maamannan (2023), directed by Mari Selvaraj, in which he played an antagonist in a politically charged drama, was widely regarded as a turning point in his choice of roles. He subsequently headlined Amaran (2024), directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, a biographical war film based on the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan.

Playback singing

Sivakarthikeyan has lent his voice to several songs in his own films, often to numbers composed by Anirudh Ravichander and D. Imman. Notable tracks include "Open the Tasmac" from Ethir Neechal and "Aathadi Aathadi" from Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam.

Significance

His films, often family-oriented entertainers, have consistently performed well at the box office in Tamil Nadu, and his production house has provided platforms for newer directors and writers in the industry.
