Sikkim, after attaining statehood in 1975, sought to expand higher and professional education within its borders, particularly in medicine and engineering, areas where students traditionally had to travel out of state. The collaboration with the Manipal group, which had decades of experience running professional institutions in Karnataka, was conceived to bring established academic infrastructure to the Himalayan state. The university functions under the legal framework of a state private university recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
SMIMS, based at Tadong, runs undergraduate and postgraduate medical programmes and is associated with the Central Referral Hospital, a multi-specialty teaching hospital that serves as the clinical training centre for medical students and provides tertiary care in the region.
SMIT, located at Majitar in East Sikkim along the Teesta valley, offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering and technology disciplines, including computer science, electronics, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, along with management and computer applications.
The university's academic portfolio spans:
For several years SMU operated a directorate of distance education that enrolled students across India in management, IT, and allied programmes. Distance learning operations were subsequently restructured in line with regulatory directions issued by the UGC concerning the offering of technical and distance programmes by private and state universities.
Sikkim Manipal University is significant as the first major university in Sikkim to offer professional education in medicine and engineering, and as an early model of public–private partnership in Indian higher education. The Central Referral Hospital attached to SMIMS is among the principal tertiary-care facilities in Sikkim, contributing to healthcare delivery in the state and adjoining regions of north-eastern India.
