Background
The institution traces its origins to Kasturba Medical College (KMC), established in 1953 by Dr. T. M. A. Pai, a physician and educationist from the Pai family of Manipal. KMC was one of the earliest private medical colleges in India and grew alongside other professional colleges set up on the Manipal hilltop campus through the latter half of the twentieth century, including the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), founded in 1957, and the Manipal College of Dental Sciences.
These constituent colleges were initially affiliated to universities such as Karnatak University, Mysore University, and later Mangalore University. As the cluster of professional institutions grew, the academy was granted deemed-to-be-university status by the Government of India in 1993, allowing it to award its own degrees.

The principal campus is situated on a plateau in Manipal, overlooking the Arabian Sea coastline. The university operates through several constituent institutions, including:

Significance
Manipal is widely credited with pioneering the model of private, self-financed professional education in India, particularly in medicine and engineering. The growth of the township around the campus—with students drawn from across India and several other countries—has made Manipal a notable example of a university town in the country. The institution has produced alumni prominent in medicine, technology, business, and the arts, and is consistently ranked among the leading private universities in India by national ranking frameworks.
