It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to students who are unable to pursue full-time regular education, and is one of the largest distance education providers in India in terms of enrolment.

| Parent institution | University of Delhi |

The School of Open Learning functions as a constituent body of the University of Delhi and provides access to university-level education through the distance mode. Students enrolled at SOL receive degrees from the University of Delhi on the same terms as those awarded to students of the university's regular colleges, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed academic requirements.
Teaching is delivered primarily through self-instructional study material, supplemented by personal contact programmes (PCPs) conducted on weekends and during vacations at designated centres. Examinations are conducted by the University of Delhi.
SOL traces its origins to the establishment of the School of Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education by the University of Delhi, which was created to extend higher education opportunities to working people, women, and students in remote areas who could not attend regular classes. The institution was later restructured and renamed as the School of Open Learning to reflect its broader mandate within the open and distance learning framework in India.
SOL offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, typically including:
The curriculum is aligned with that of the University of Delhi's regular departments, and study material is prepared with input from the university's faculty.
The School of Open Learning is headquartered at the North Campus of the University of Delhi. It operates regional and study centres in different parts of Delhi to facilitate the conduct of personal contact programmes, distribution of study material, and student services. The school is headed by an Executive Director and functions under the overall supervision of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi.
SOL has played a major role in widening access to higher education in India, particularly for students from economically weaker backgrounds, working professionals, and those residing outside Delhi. By providing recognised University of Delhi degrees through the distance mode, it has helped extend the reach of one of India's leading universities to a far larger student population than its regular colleges can accommodate.
