It offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme as its flagship postgraduate degree, and admits doctoral candidates pursuing PhD research in areas spanning organisational behaviour, finance, marketing, operations, human resource management, information systems and economics. As a department of an institution governed by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, the school benefits from the institute-wide academic and administrative framework.

Background

NIT Rourkela was established in 1961 as the Regional Engineering College, Rourkela, and was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology in 2002. The campus is spread over a sizeable area in the steel city of Rourkela. While the institute is best known for its engineering and science programmes, it has progressively diversified into management and humanities education, with the School of Management forming the principal vehicle for management teaching and research at the institute.

Academic programmes

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) — a two-year, full-time postgraduate degree with specialisations typically offered in finance, marketing, human resources, operations, and information systems.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) — full-time and part-time doctoral research in core management disciplines and related interdisciplinary areas.

Admission to the MBA programme is generally based on national-level entrance examinations such as the Common Admission Test (CAT), followed by group discussion and personal interview rounds conducted by the institute.

Research and activities

Faculty and research scholars at the School of Management publish in areas including supply chain management, financial markets, consumer behaviour, technology management, sustainability, and organisational studies. The school organises seminars, management conclaves and student-run events, and collaborates with engineering departments on projects that combine technical and managerial perspectives.

Significance

As a management school within a centrally funded technical institution, the School of Management at NIT Rourkela contributes to the institute's effort to produce graduates with combined exposure to technology and management. It is among several management departments established within the NIT system to broaden the scope of these institutions beyond traditional engineering education.
