Background
NIT Rourkela traces its origin to the Regional Engineering College (REC), Rourkela, which was set up in 1961 as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Odisha. The campus is situated in the steel city of Rourkela, which was developed around the Rourkela Steel Plant of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The institute was conceived as part of a national network of regional engineering colleges intended to train technical manpower for India's industrial development following independence.
In 2002, REC Rourkela was converted into the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, and brought under the direct administrative control of the central government. With the enactment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, NIT Rourkela was formally recognised as an Institute of National Importance, granting it autonomy in academic and administrative matters and the authority to award its own degrees.
Academics
The institute offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Business Administration (MBA), integrated dual-degree programmes, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes. Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), administered through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), while postgraduate admissions are based on national-level examinations such as GATE.
Academic activities are organised through several departments and schools covering areas such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture and Regional Planning, the basic sciences, humanities and social sciences, and management studies.
Campus
The campus is located on the outskirts of Rourkela and houses academic departments, central research facilities, libraries, hostels for male and female students, residential quarters for faculty and staff, sports grounds, and an indoor stadium. The institute also operates central facilities such as a Biju Patnaik Central Library and a number of central instrumentation and computing facilities supporting research across disciplines.
Governance
As with other NITs, NIT Rourkela is governed by a Board of Governors under the framework of the NIT Council, which is chaired by the Union Minister of Education. The institute is headed by a Director, supported by Deans, Heads of Departments, and a Registrar. Academic policy is set by the Senate, which comprises senior faculty members of the institute.
Research and significance
NIT Rourkela is among the leading technical institutions in eastern India and contributes to research in materials science, metallurgy, mining, manufacturing, energy, electronics, computing and allied fields. Its proximity to major industrial establishments such as the Rourkela Steel Plant and mining operations in Odisha and Jharkhand has historically supported industry-oriented research and training in metallurgy and mineral engineering. The institute regularly features in national rankings such as the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Education.
