The university traces its origins to the educational activities of the Sanjay Ghodawat Group, an industrial conglomerate founded by entrepreneur Sanjay Ghodawat. Before being granted university status, the group operated technical and management institutes in the Kolhapur region, including engineering and polytechnic programmes affiliated to the Maharashtra state technical education framework. Sanjay Ghodawat University was subsequently established as a self-financed state private university under an enactment of the Government of Maharashtra, allowing it to offer its own degree programmes.
The campus is situated on the outskirts of Kolhapur along the Pune–Bengaluru highway corridor, in a region that has emerged as an education and industrial hub of western Maharashtra. The university is organised into schools and faculties covering technology, management studies, basic and applied sciences, commerce, humanities, agricultural sciences, and pharmacy. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level programmes, and supports research activity through dedicated centres and laboratories.
The institution maintains residential facilities, sports infrastructure, and student clubs covering technical, cultural and entrepreneurial interests. Placement and industry interaction activities are coordinated centrally for students across disciplines.
As one of the private universities in southern Maharashtra, SGU contributes to the higher education landscape of the Kolhapur–Sangli–Belagavi belt, a region historically dependent on universities such as Shivaji University for affiliated colleges. Its multidisciplinary structure and links with the Sanjay Ghodawat Group's industrial operations situate it within the broader trend of industry-affiliated private universities in India.
