Background
Shivaji University was established in 1962 to meet the growing demand for higher education in the southern districts of Maharashtra, an area that had previously been served by universities based farther afield. The institution was inaugurated by the then President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The university campus is spread over a large area on the outskirts of Kolhapur city, at the foothills which form part of the broader Western Ghats landscape.
