The university grew out of the academic activities of the Sandip Foundation, an educational trust that had earlier set up engineering and professional institutions in the Nashik region. Following the enactment of Maharashtra's framework for self-financed private universities, the foundation's higher education operations were consolidated into a unitary university structure based at the Mahiravani campus on the Nashik–Trimbakeshwar road.
Sandip University organises its teaching and research through a number of constituent schools, typically covering:
The university awards bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, and as a private university recognised by the state, its degrees are listed by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The main campus is situated at Mahiravani in Nashik district, on the route connecting Nashik city with the pilgrimage town of Trimbakeshwar. The campus houses academic blocks, laboratories, libraries, hostels, and sports facilities. The Sandip Foundation also operates a campus at Sijoul in Madhubani district of Bihar, under a separate institutional identity.
As one of the private universities established in north Maharashtra, Sandip University contributes to the expansion of higher education capacity in the Nashik region, which has historically been served primarily by Savitribai Phule Pune University-affiliated colleges and a smaller number of autonomous and deemed institutions.
