The Motherson group traces its origins to a small trading enterprise founded by Vivek Chaand Sehgal and his mother Swaraj Sehgal in the 1970s. The company entered automotive component manufacturing through a joint venture with Sumitomo Wiring Systems of Japan, leading to the formation of Motherson Sumi Systems Limited (MSSL), which became the group's principal listed entity for several decades.
Over time, the group expanded both organically and through acquisitions, building a presence across multiple continents and supplying virtually all major global automakers. In 2022, the group undertook a corporate reorganisation under which the domestic wiring harness business was demerged, and the listed parent was renamed Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (SAMIL), consolidating the group's diversified businesses.
Samvardhana Motherson operates manufacturing plants and engineering centres across India, Europe, North America, South America, Asia-Pacific and Africa. Its customer base includes major automotive OEMs such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Renault-Nissan, Stellantis, Ford, and others. The group has also extended into non-automotive areas including aerospace, healthcare and consumer electronics components.
Vivek Chaand Sehgal serves as the chairman of the group. The professional management has historically included long-standing executives associated with the group's growth and its joint venture with the Sumitomo Group of Japan, which remains a strategic partner.
Samvardhana Motherson is regarded as one of India's most successful global manufacturing enterprises. Its growth illustrates the rise of Indian auto component suppliers from domestic vendors to tier-1 partners for global automakers. The group has frequently been cited as an example of cross-border acquisitions executed by Indian manufacturing firms, and it plays a significant role in the Indian automotive supply chain.
