Maruti Suzuki India Limited is an Indian automobile manufacturer headquartered in New Delhi. A subsidiary of the Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corporation, it is the largest passenger car manufacturer in India by volume and has been the dominant player in the Indian car market since the mid-1980s.

Background

The company traces its origin to Maruti Udyog Limited, a state-owned enterprise established by the Government of India to produce an affordable "people's car" for the Indian middle class. The project drew its name from a small-car initiative associated with Sanjay Gandhi in the 1970s. After Sanjay Gandhi's death, the venture was reorganised, and in 1982 a joint venture agreement was signed between the Government of India and Suzuki Motor Company of Japan.

Production began at the Gurgaon plant in Haryana, and the launch of the Maruti 800 in December 1983 is widely regarded as a turning point in Indian automotive history, replacing older designs such as the Hindustan Ambassador and Premier Padmini as the aspirational family car.
