The university was set up under a state legislative act of the Government of Sikkim, which authorises private universities within the state. As a state private university, it derives its legal status and degree-granting authority from the State of Sikkim while operating under the broader academic and administrative framework of the SRM Group.
The SRM Group, founded by T. R. Pachamuthu, expanded from its original base at Kattankulathur in Tamil Nadu to multiple states, including Andhra Pradesh, Haryana (Sonepat), and Sikkim. The Sikkim campus was conceived as part of this multi-state expansion, with the aim of providing professional education in the north-eastern region of India.
The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through its various schools and departments. Programme areas typically include:
Like other universities in the SRM network, the Sikkim campus follows a credit-based academic structure, with admissions conducted through entrance examinations and merit-based selection.
The campus is situated in the Gangtok area of East Sikkim. The setting in the eastern Himalayas places the institution within a region notable for its biodiversity, cultural plurality, and proximity to the borders of Bhutan, Nepal, and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The location has shaped the university's intake, drawing students from Sikkim, the wider north-eastern states, eastern India, and neighbouring countries.
Sikkim has historically had a limited number of higher education institutions, with state-supported bodies such as Sikkim University and Sikkim Manipal University forming the core of the tertiary education sector. The establishment of SRM University, Sikkim added to the small group of private universities recognised by the state government, contributing to the diversification of professional and technical education in the region.
