The company traces its origins to Bombay Suburban Electric Supply (BSES), an electricity utility that supplied power to parts of Mumbai for several decades. After acquisition by the Reliance group, BSES was renamed Reliance Energy Limited, and subsequently rebranded as Reliance Infrastructure Limited to reflect its broader scope across infrastructure verticals.
Following the demerger of the Reliance Industries empire between the Ambani brothers in 2005, the company became part of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, with Anil Ambani as its chairman.
Reliance Infrastructure operates through a network of subsidiaries and joint ventures dedicated to specific projects. Affiliated companies within the broader Reliance Group have included Reliance Power, Reliance Capital and Reliance Communications.
As one of India's diversified infrastructure firms, Reliance Infrastructure has participated in major public-private partnership initiatives in power distribution, metro transit and highway development. Its role in operating Mumbai's first metro line and in legacy urban electricity distribution gives it a notable place in the history of Indian urban infrastructure.
