Background
Reliance Power was incorporated as a subsidiary within the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, which was formed following the demerger of the Reliance Industries empire between brothers Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani in 2005. The company was set up to pursue large-scale power generation opportunities in India, in the context of the country's growing electricity demand and reforms under the Electricity Act, 2003.
Initial public offering
Reliance Power launched its initial public offering in January 2008. The IPO attracted significant investor interest and was heavily oversubscribed, becoming one of the most prominent public issues in Indian capital market history at that time. Shares were listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India in February 2008.
Projects and operations
Reliance Power has developed and operated a portfolio spanning thermal, hydro and renewable energy. Notable projects associated with the company include:
- Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project – a coal-fired power plant in Sasan, Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh, developed under the Government of India's Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) framework, with linked captive coal mines.
- Rosa Power Plant – a coal-based thermal power station located in Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh.
- Butibori Power Plant – a coal-based plant in Butibori, near Nagpur, Maharashtra.
- Samalkot Power Project – a gas-based facility in Andhra Pradesh.
- Renewable energy projects – solar power facilities including those in Rajasthan, and wind energy assets in Maharashtra.
Corporate developments
Like other companies in the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group, Reliance Power has undergone significant corporate restructuring, including divestments and debt resolution efforts. The company has periodically reorganised its asset portfolio in response to challenges in the Indian power sector, including fuel supply issues, regulatory changes and financial stress affecting independent power producers.
Significance
Reliance Power is among the larger private sector players in India's electricity generation industry. Its Sasan UMPP is one of the country's largest integrated power and coal mining complexes, and the company's IPO is often cited in studies of Indian primary capital markets due to its scale and subsequent share price performance.
