Ravi Teja was born into a Telugu Kshatriya (Raju) family. Owing to his father's profession in the State Bank of India, he had a peripatetic upbringing across various towns in northern India, including Jaipur, Bhopal, and Mirzapur. He completed his schooling at the Kendriya Vidyalaya system and later pursued higher education in Hyderabad before moving to Chennai (then Madras) to seek a career in films.
Ravi Teja began his film career in the late 1980s, taking on small roles and assistant director work. He served as an assistant director to filmmakers including A. Kodandarami Reddy. During this period he played minor and supporting roles in numerous Telugu films, gradually building experience in front of the camera.
His career received a significant boost with Nee Kosam (1999), directed by Srinu Vaitla, which won him the Nandi Special Jury Award. He gained wider recognition with Itlu Sravani Subramanyam (2001) and consolidated his position as a lead actor with Khadgam (2002), directed by Krishna Vamsi, in which he featured alongside Srikanth and Prakash Raj.
Films such as Idiot (2002), Venky (2004), Naa Autograph (2004), and Vikramarkudu (2006) established him as a leading commercial actor. Vikramarkudu, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, was particularly successful and was later remade in multiple Indian languages, including the Hindi blockbuster Rowdy Rathore. Other notable films from this period include Krishna (2008) and Kick (2009), the latter directed by Surender Reddy.
